From leafy Karen to buzzing Westlands, here's where to base yourself for the perfect Nairobi stay.
Nairobi is not one city but many. Where you stay shapes your days here more than almost anything else — the commute, the coffee, the sound outside your window at seven in the morning. After a decade of hosting guests across the city, we've learned that the "best" neighbourhood is simply the one that matches how you intend to live.
Here's our honest guide to the five areas where we place our residences, and who each one suits.
If your days involve meetings, Westlands is the obvious answer. It is Nairobi's commercial centre: glass towers, embassies, and a restaurant scene that runs from Ethiopian injera to proper Neapolitan pizza. The area has densified fast, which means everything is close — but also that traffic at 5pm is a genuine consideration.
Stay here if: you're in town for business, you want to walk to dinner, and you value convenience over quiet.
Kilimani sits just south of Westlands and offers a softer version of the same energy. Tree-lined streets, a growing café culture, and easy access to both the CBD and the Ngong Road corridor. It has become the default choice for the city's young professionals and long-stay expatriates.
Stay here if: you want a balance of buzz and calm, and you plan to be in Nairobi for more than a fortnight.
Older, greener, and considerably quieter. Lavington is where Nairobi families live. Wide streets, high walls, mature gardens. There's less to walk to, but what you gain is genuine peace — the kind that makes a month-long stay feel restorative rather than exhausting.
Stay here if: you're travelling with family, working remotely, or simply want to sleep well.
Named after Karen Blixen, and still carrying something of that colonial-era spaciousness. Plots are large, the Ngong Hills sit on the horizon, and the Nairobi National Park is minutes away. The trade-off is distance: you will drive everywhere, and the commute into town can be forty minutes or more.
Stay here if: you want a garden, you have a car, and proximity to the city is not your priority.
A small, discreet enclave threaded along Riverside Drive. It offers the rare combination of genuine tranquillity and a five-minute drive to Westlands. Diplomatic residences, mature jacarandas, and very little through-traffic.
Stay here if: you want the convenience of Westlands without the noise of it. This is where we'd stay ourselves.
Whatever you choose, factor traffic into your plans. Nairobi's rush hours — roughly 7–9am and 5–7pm — can double journey times. Our concierge team can advise on the realistic travel time between any of our residences and your meetings.
The right neighbourhood doesn't just house you. It decides what your trip feels like.
If you're unsure which area suits your stay, tell us how you plan to spend your days and we'll point you to the right address. That's the advantage of booking direct.
