Nairobi for Families: Where to Stay and What to Do

Space, safety and unforgettable experiences — planning the ideal family trip to Nairobi.

Nairobi is an unusually good city for children. The weather is mild year-round, there is genuine wildlife within the city limits, and the pace outside the business districts is unhurried. What families need most here is space — and that is precisely what a serviced apartment offers over a hotel room.

Choosing the Right Base

For families, we consistently recommend Lavington or Karen. Both offer larger residences, gardens or shared green space, and quiet streets. Karen in particular puts you close to the wildlife attractions children remember for years.

If your trip includes meetings in town, Riverside is the compromise: calm enough for children, close enough to Westlands for you.

What to look for in the apartment itself

  • A separate living area, so bedtime doesn't end everyone's evening
  • A full kitchen — with children, eating out three times a day is neither affordable nor pleasant
  • A washing machine
  • Secure, gated parking and controlled entry
  • Ground-floor or lift access if you're travelling with a pram

What Children Actually Love Here

The Giraffe Centre

A raised platform brings you level with the giraffes' heads. Children feed them by hand. It is gentle, safe, and reliably the highlight of the trip.

Nairobi National Park

Manageable in a morning, which matters enormously with small children. Zebra and giraffe are near-guaranteed; lion and rhino are a genuine possibility. Go early, bring snacks.

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Orphaned elephants, a short public visiting window, and a strict booking requirement. Reserve well ahead. Explain to children beforehand why the elephants are there — it lands.

Simple Green Space

Karura Forest has walking trails, waterfalls and safe cycling paths inside the city. It is the answer to a day when nobody wants to get in a car.

Practical Matters

Health

Nairobi has excellent private hospitals. Discuss malaria prophylaxis and routine vaccinations with your doctor before travelling — Nairobi's altitude means low malaria risk in the city itself, but this depends on your wider itinerary and your doctor should advise, not a website.

Water and Food

Drink filtered or bottled water. Our residences provide purified drinking water. Produce is excellent; wash it as you would anywhere.

Getting Around with Children

Car seats are not standard in ride-hailing vehicles. If you need one, tell your concierge in advance and we will arrange a private driver with the right equipment.

Children remember the giraffe. Parents remember the sleep. Book a residence with enough rooms for both.

A Note on Pace

Two activities a day is plenty. Nairobi's traffic will consume more of your morning than you expect, and a rushed family is not a happy one. Leave afternoons open.

Several of our three- and four-bedroom residences are particularly suited to families. Tell us the ages of your children and we will recommend the right one.
